Setting: Will is from a contemporary setting in the U.S. that centers around the FBI Headquarters and Minnesota predominantly. He lives in a two-story house in the middle of nowhere with his eight or so stray dogs. A former profiler, now teacher, he is asked to come back to the field and help Jack Crawford to solve a string of serial murders. As a precaution so that he doesn't get in too deep, he begins to see Hannibal for therapy sessions. Little does Will know that Hannibal is secretly another serial killer they've been trying to find for a long time: The Chesapeake Ripper. Some episodes touch on this, but no one ever finds out his identity as the killer, thus far.
Will gets deep into many different killers' minds, but not near as deep as with Garrett Jacob-Hobbs, the father of Abigail, whom he has killed in the line of duty. Since then, Hobbs--or a manifestation of him in Will's mind--continues to haunt Will, picking at his weak mental stability, pressing at him for enjoying the feeling of killing him. As far as outside forces, he has folks like Freddie Lounds and Frederick Chilton who express suspicion and morbid fascination respectively towards Will and his mind.
A series of murders begin to occur that mimic cases that Will becomes intimately attached to. The mysterious Copycat Killer comes to a rise with Garrett Jacob-Hobbs style and continues throughout the series with a total of five victims by the season finale.
Will starts to break, but keeps at it because "he's saving lives" and in seeing Dr. Lecter, he hopes that he'll get better, things will get better. They don't. In fact, we as the viewer come to understand that Hannibal is actually making it much, much worse. In the meantime, Hannibal likes to secretly feed people other people and make veiled cannibal puns that only him and the viewer understand.
As the story continues, Hannibal expresses a desire for friendship with Will to his own psychiatrist, an idea that is laughable to the audience because "excuse you asshole, you're only making him worse!" Will continues to fall apart. This is caused by encephalitis, an inflammation in his brain that causes hallucinations, headaches, loss of time, as well as nausea and many other things. Hannibal tells no one of this and so Will doesn't get proper treatment. It slowly becomes apparent that Will is not fit to carry a gun, but Jack, who blindly puts too much trust in both Will and Hannibal, denies what's happening right in front of him and doesn't stop Will from keeping on.
We come to a close with Hannibal manipulating many aspects of Will's life and framing him for murder. Will is arrested and later hospitalized for a gun shot wound received from Jack in an instance where Will escapes his transit vehicle from holding to prison and threatens Hannibal with a gun. It's then that he is treated for his occurrence of encephalitis. We close with Will now in holding and Hannibal coming to see him for what he says is a "farewell." The veil is lifted from Will's eyes-- somewhat. He knows of Hannibal's identity as the Copycat Killer, just not yet of his identity as the Chesapeake Ripper. End Season One.
Personality: Most people upon their first impression of Will in a social setting would say that he is nervous, quiet, and maybe a tad anti-social. In a classroom setting, he would be described as a bold speaker with carefully picked word choice and elaborate illustration of the crimes he describes. The reason for this is that he's unsure of how to carry himself or speak in a conversation, but while teaching, he is speaking at an audience and so he doesn't have to worry about the responses he gets from them. There's no concern that he might say or behave in a way that is considered strange or socially wrong.
He has a natural inclination to avoid eye contact with people, because as he says in the show "Eyes are distracting. You see too much. You don't see enough." Being someone with such strong empathy, applying this to his life outside of work is strange and overwhelming. If you see too much, that can cause issues with a relationship, but see too little, and you wonder if you're valuable to a person at all.
In the show, he began to experience the symptoms of encephalitis. Headaches at first, then dizziness and eventually he began to experience losses of time. This slowly led him to become panicked, unsure of what was happening and he began searching for a source of stability. This was Hannibal, who he didn't realize was watching his condition progress further, leading Will to believe that he had a mental disorder of some kind. Eventually he began to experience really extreme hallucinations and very morbid, lucid nightmares. If his condition becomes too serious, he could even become a danger to others. This is important to consider as if Will is not receiving medical treatment for his encephalitis in game, it may come back and the symptoms will affect him again.
He is, to this day, haunted by Garrett Jacob-Hobbs, the serial killer that he killed to save the life of Abigail, Hobbs' daughter. He sees Hobbs when working cases as well as in his dreams, where he taunts and picks him apart. The build-up of these instances with Hobbs leads Will to believe that he really did kill Abigail, even though he was framed by Hannibal. Chances are that Hobbs will stay with Will for the rest of his life, and this could lead him down a road where he does kill, especially if his encephalitis does flare up again.
Will's social detachment is considered to be a result from his childhood. He never knew his mother and he moved around a lot with his father. His family was poor and he was always the new kid, so he never had a stable foundation to build strong social bonds. Chances are that his relationship with his father was rather distanced as well, but given his inclination towards working with motors and the knowledge that his father worked in shipyards, it could have been very strong as well given the likeness in interest. It's unsure because he also says that he never quite understood the concept of family.
In dialogue of the show, Will has said that he's mentally in the vein of being on the autism spectrum, and many of his behaviors would lend to this idea, but his ability to empathize, overly so sometimes, would indicate otherwise. This is also confirmed by the show writer Bryan Fuller, when being confronted with the question of if Will has Asperger Syndrome or another form of autism. He distances himself from others and avoids social interaction as a safeguard of his own mental state. Instead, he creates social bonds with dogs, as they are more honest and easier to trust than humans.
Will has a lot of physical habits: things like taking deep breaths or sighs, running his hands over his face, and for someone who prefers to avoid eye contact, is very expressive with his eyebrows. His carriage is very self-assured for someone that prefers not to be the center of attention, not withdrawn at all. His speech has very fluctuating intonations, something that is consistent regardless of his emotional state.
Generally he tries to keep himself collected, but at times his temper gets the better of him. He's never been seen when he lets go, but he has admitted that when frustrated, if he started to scream he might not be able to stop. This gives a relatively clear idea that his aggression can be great and possibly even dangerous if it gets the better of him. His visible frustration becomes evident the more of his physical habits show through, but his caged frustration is more present in a detached and almost resigned manner, as if knowing that letting out even the smallest trace would cause him to unhinge completely.
Being in a place between life, dreaming, and death will more than likely be a very jarring experience for Will. As a man who has gruesome and vivid nightmares-- including an instance where he melts into water--, even if his encephalitis is in check, the crossover between states of existence could cause his nightmares to bleed into his "reality." His emotional reaction may be a mix between confusion and frustration followed by a short-lived sense of relief that he's away from the fate he was condemned to by Hannibal. The relief would more than likely end upon learning that Hannibal is also there.
Appearance: Will Graham
A man of simple dress and preference to plaid shirts. He also usually wears glasses, non-prescription, as a buffer between him and people he doesn't trust very well or isn't particularly comfortable around. He usually takes them off when alone or during one-on-one time, generally with someone that he does trust.
Abilities: Will has the ability to look at a crime scene, take in all the fine details of the evidence and bring himself into a state of total empathy with the killer. With this, he visualizes the entirety of how the crime was executed and this insight allows him to see and consider details that other forensics specialists wouldn't consider. It's not elaborated in the show, but there's the possibility that this skill could be applied to empathizing with anyone, but it's dangerous as he tends to lose himself in all the noise of the people he connects with.
Will grew up predominantly on shipyards with his father and has been seen tinkering with motors on few occasions throughout the series. He even expresses a verbal interest in working with diesel engines if he were to leave the FBI. It can be assumed that he has an extensive knowledge of boat and truck motors from this, and possibly car motors as well. This could possibly be applied to doing work in the game if he lives in the Metal Sector.
He is seen as having many formerly stray dogs, the predominant companions of his life. It can be guessed that he applies his empathy to connecting with animals as they are more honest than humans and he is not likely to get caught in their minds. Will could probably connect with the animal life if he becomes integrated into the environment well enough.
He is also a fly fisherman in his off time, and this includes crafting his own lures with great detail. Growing up around the water, chances are he has been a fisherman for a very long time and is very skilled at it, enough that he could probably apply this to his share of work in the game.
Inventory: This particular variety of gray prison jumpsuit, white t-shirt, and presumably boxers are the only belongings on his person.
Suite: Preferably the Water sector for him, as it seems like the environment he would be most comfortable in, given his roots on the water. Metal might also be suitable though, as Will is skilled with vehicular mechanics, though he isn't really too concerned with material wealth. A one or two level suite would suit him fine, as it would give him some wiggle room for his hobbies.
In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
Will enjoyed his residence in the Water sector so far. The canals everywhere brought him back to simpler times in his life when he spent a lot of time on the water. He often spent his days working in the Wood sector though, as he enjoyed fishing and the benefit of taking roughly seventy percent of his catches there to sell wasn't bad either. Whatever catches he had left, he prepared for himself and that worked out rather well.
He definitely preferred traveling in the Water sector though, with the boats as opposed to the Kirin pulling carts. They reminded him of a beast he'd seen in his nightmares sometimes, one he didn't quite understand the association of until everything had fallen apart. He looked at the Kirin and saw the stag, which then transformed to Hannibal but with sallow, dark skin, distorted frame and large antlers that looked as if they could tear him apart.
He walked along the path, cart passing him by. He locked eyes with the Kirin and in the blackness he saw Abigail torn apart by the stag, flesh stuck in its teeth and hanging from its antlers. Will blinked and saw the Kirin again, overlapped with the vision in his mind. He felt his heart shudder and he quickly stepped off the path, collecting himself against a tree. Hands shaking slightly, he grabbed the canteen from his belt and drank some water. The rush of liquid down his throat felt like a blanket of comfort washing over him, washing away the thoughts that haunted him.
With deep breaths, he brought himself back on the path and continued until he could return to the gentle embrace of his boat and take the canals home.

[A soft throat clearing is heard, then a slow breath in with a somewhat shaky release.] Hello. My name is Will. Out of... personal preference, I am using audio instead of video. There isn't much to say about myself. I was a teacher with a specialty in criminal psychology before my arrival here. One of my hobbies was fishing, so I am interested in fishing for a living here. That said, I don't know much about the breeds of fish... native to this place. Anything, actually.
I imagine there's a library here? I suppose that just going to the fish market would also help me learn about the ecology here. [There's a bit of silence, then some soft rustling of fabric, indicative that he's probably fidgeting a bit. This isn't just an outgoing message, it's an open conversation starter with who knows how many people, and he's nervous about that. With a sigh, he continues.]
I don't intend to ask for a lot, but a point in the right direction would be [a pause to consider his word choice] greatly appreciated.
